About Thailand

The Kingdom of Thailand (formerly known as Siam up until 1949) is situated in the heart of South East Asia and shares borders with Myanmar (Burma), Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia. Other countries close by include Vietnam, Singapore and Indonesia.

Geographically, Thailand is approximately 513,000 km2 and is roughly the same size as Spain with an approximately 63 million people. The terrain is tropical jungle by nature with mountainous regions in the North and coastal areas to the South. The majority of the population consists of ethnic Thai however there is also a large influential Chinese community as well as smaller Mon (from the North) and Khmers (from the East) groups.

Thailand’s national religion is Theravada Buddhism which is practiced by the vast majority of Thais. There is also a considerable amount of Muslims, especially in the southern religions close to Malaysia, as well as Christians, Hindus and other religions. Thailand’s religious practices have also been strongly influenced by the Chinese and Indian cultures.

Thailand is a constitutional monarchy with King Bhumibol Adulyadej as the ruling monarch. The King is the world’s longest ruling monarch and is recognized as the Head of State, Head of the Armed forces and Upholder of the Buddhist Religion. The King is revered by the Thai people and has had an immense influence on Thailand’s history over the past half a century.
